Welcome 2012

I’m really glad 2012 is almost here.  The last months of 2011 seemed to fly by with work, parenting, playing, more work, more parenting, and sometimes sleeping.  My daughter Kora started crawling, then walking, then getting into everything!  Her curiosity is contagious, and I am curious what 2012 will bring.

I am excited to start teaching new FamilySong Music classes on Wednesday mornings at the Boulder JCC.  These will be my first morning music classes in a while, as my mornings are usually reserved for teaching in preschools.  I am also working towards birthing a new event for families involving music and dance, and I am super excited about this one! Stay tuned for details, and until then – Happy New Year!

Music as a Resource

These times we are living in can be so intense & things can change so rapidly.  Friends of mine are having babies, getting chemo, and having parents die.  Life is so wonderful, mysterious and hard all at once.

What are our resources that get us through?  What keeps the light coming in through the cracks when you find yourself in a dark room?

For me, music is a resource.  Songs can pull us through a hard time.  Singing uplifting lyrics can change my state of mind.  Humming a beautiful melody brings me closer to the divine and can remind me that there is more out there than just me.

Music can touch us so deeply; it can bring us into the moment and help give us glimpse of understanding this mysterious world we live in.   Do you have a favorite song that touches your heart?  A song whose words bring you into a moment of truth?  Leave a comment with one of your Resource Songs.

I have been singing this song of late ~ (We are going to be singing this song in the next FamilySong Music Classes)

When there is no road, I follow the path.  When there’s no path, I follow the footprints. When there are no tracks, not one bent blade of grass, I follow the motion of my breathing.

Singing is Your Birthright

Every spiritual tradition has one thing in common: music.  People have always sung the name of the divine & played music and sung to connect more deeply to the mysteries of life.  Whether Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, Jewish, Pagan, Islamic – music plays an instrumental (pun intended) role in ceremonies, helping bring a human and celebratory element.

In teaching FamilySong and other early childhood music classes for kids and caregivers, I encounter adults all the time who are shy to sing and explore their voices.  It’s completely natural to be shy if you haven’t had much singing experience in your life.  (Especially if you have sung before and you were criticized – which is always a shame!)

Now to connect the two thoughts – I’ve been wondering: if people feel more of sense of the divine when singing, would they be less shy to sing?  If people feel a sense of connecting with something greater than themselves when they sing, would they worry less about how they sound compared to others and concentrate more on the feeling of singing?

I love teaching FamilySong for so many reasons, and one of these reasons is singing songs with lyrics about the earth, community, self-love, & the Great Spirit.  When I can focus on inspirational lyrics and the energy of the song, I feel more connected with all that is.  I focus less on how I sound and more on the experience of the sound coming through me, and the experience of many voices singing together, which is always truly wonderful.

Singing is every person’s birthright.  You can accept that singing is your child’s birthright, but can you accept that it is also yours?  We are born to sing to express ourselves and to live more joyfully.  We can create being more centered, connected and alive right now just through singing.  So claim it as your own and let yourself sing out – for you and for your children!

Chautauqua FamilySong Music class

Yesterday’s FamilySong music class at Chautauqua was fabulous. We had 20 mamas and kids singing and dancing to world music and music with heart. Surrounded by tall trees with the mountains in the background and a cool breeze, singing, playing drums and egg shakers, felt magnificent. Thanks to all who attended! I’m glad we have 7 more weeks of class.

Singing bowl

I love borrowing my friend Selena’s large crystal singing bowl. Kora stares at it as it resonates and I love the loud booming quality of the sound.

Cuddletime Concert

Today I led a concert for parents & children called Cuddletime Concert at the Broomfield Library. We sang about welcoming back the rain, and we made the sounds of rain using our hands and feet.  A little 5 week old baby girl came to class with her parents, and she was so little and cute! The kids always love to touch the guitar at the end.

Magical Music Preschool

Yesterday in my three preschool music classes, I asked all three classes to make the sound that mommy says when she wakes up in the morning. All three classes said, “Shh!!” How funny!
